HealthCare Summit 2012: A Function of Content, Opportunity to Hone Relationships

CareCore National EVP Mike Joslin sat down recently with CEO Douglas Tardio to discuss the company’s third annual Healthcare Summit, staged earlier this month on Hilton Head Island.  With presentations from over 12 unique thought leaders, this year’s Summit offered incredible insight for attendees on the complexities of our current healthcare system culminating with an overview of the pending Supreme Court ruling on the Accountable Care Act (ACA) that may bring even more challenges in the years to come.  We also heard from organizations inside and outside healthcare that like CareCore are offering solutions and tackling the challenges of quality and cost.

Joslin:  As the 3rd year of CareCore National’s Healthcare Summit, how has the event evolved from previous Summits?

Tardio:  It’s definitely been refined over the past two years to where we’re focused on providing speakers and topics that align with our audience.  We ask ourselves, what valuable insight can we present to our customers? A good example of that value in content is the presentation offered by Keynote Speaker Mark McClellan, the former Centers for Medicaid and Medicare (CMS) administrator who explained the challenges of incentivizing federal health programs.  We confront issues with Medicaid and Medicare daily and they’re growing more costly and complex.  Another speaker who certainly engaged our audience was renowned Washington, D.C attorney and former Supreme Court clerk, Gregory Rapawy.  He shed new light on the influencers behind the pending Supreme Court decision.  We all left the room feeling the weight of the decisions justices face as they debate ACA and the individual mandate in the months ahead.  This topic is so pertinent—the vote will have a big impact on the way we all do business.

Joslin:  Explain the importance of hosting an event like the Healthcare Summit.

Tardio:  Although the cost’s associated with our healthcare system is an increasing component of our economy, it is comprised of a relatively small number of key industry leaders and is based on relationships.  We’ve been nurturing those relationships since the company’s inception in 1994 and value each unique customer.  The Healthcare Summit is the ideal setting to strengthen our business relationships.  It allows us to spend quality time with our partners and give something back.  We listen to their thoughts, views and concerns.  Though we sponsor the event, it’s not about promoting CareCore National.  It’s about recognizing the relationships that steadily help grow our business.

Joslin:  What specific features of the Healthcare Summit interest attending healthcare executives?

Tardio:  Everyone’s thinking about the future of healthcare.  The Summit gives us a moment to reflect on the future on a number of levels, whether they pertain to big data, dual eligibles, accountable care organization implementation or the Supreme Court’s next ruling.  Questions are raised as executives wonder, how will this affect my company?  At the Summit they can network with peers and exchange ideas with counterparts while listening to nationally recognized thought leaders.  It’s the kind of gathering and subsequent discussion businesses don’t necessarily encounter within their own organizations on a day-to-day basis.  That says a lot for expansion of the Summit in the years ahead.

Joslin:  What does the Healthcare Summit bring to the Hilton Head-Bluffton community?

Tardio:  There’s no doubt that the Summit examines national health issues that also exist here in our own backyard, so the presentations have great value for local healthcare executives and business leaders who attend.  Beyond that aspect of it, the summit brings in a cross-section of guests from all over the country who see the community in its finest hour, during the RBC Heritage.  Because we facilitate a positive encounter with the Lowcountry we trust they’re likely to return for vacations or our next Healthcare Summit.  Either way, they’re establishing ties and supporting the economy on the island and in surrounding areas.  It’s a win-win result for all of us.
